Creating A Lead Magnet eBook: Practical Steps To Write A Giveaway Short Report For Your Blog Readers
Have you written a giveaway eBook (aka ‘lead magnet’) to “gift” your loyal blog readers when they opt-in? If not, what do you give your subscribers, as a thank you gift for joining your list? If you do not have an eBook / free report as a lead magnet for building your email subscribers list, you are leaving a lot of subscribers to other blogs.
Are you a small or home business owner – selling or marketing a thing or two online? Are you giving something of value to your readers and subscribers? Do you know that you can significantly attract more audience (blog readers, subscribers, customers, and sales) simply by offering them something for free? An informational material such as a small eBook, report, software – in full or samples – can make them like you more and buy repeatedly from you, and even tell their friends (free promotions) about you.

This post is a follow-up to “How to Increase Opt-Ins and Get More Buyers By Giving Away Free Reports”. You may want to get the full benefit of this series by reading that post after this. Although the objective of this post is to provide a step-by-step process for bloggers to create their freebie giveaway offer to subscribers, you can also use the steps herein for writing eBooks for profit.
Why Should You Create An eBook?
The idea of creating a new free report or eBook discourages new and even existing entrepreneur who are building their business online with blogging. It’s not their fault – there’s too much to do and yet only limited time in every single day.
In this post, I am going to show you a quick fix tocreate a traffic pulling eBook in just 1 day and then have a quality eBook giveaway that your readers would find useful and you can use to attract more subscribers to your opt-in form. Read on but be sure to have your computer ready to do every step in this post, while reading. It is advisable to print out this post first so that you do not have to switch between windows on your computer.
Below are steps to a quick and easy way to create your own free giveaway report. To make this easy to follow, I have written two different methods for two target categories of audience: (i) People just starting out on their blogs and have only but a few posts or just beginning to create posts for their blogs and (ii) people who have blogs with more than a few contents.
Step #1a – Method 1: For Older Blogs With A Couple of Contents

If you are not just starting your business blog, it’s so much easier to create your own free offer, and you can write an eBook to use as your free offer. An eBook is simply a collection of related topics that make up a theme, presented in a coherent order.
Find Most Popular Posts: Find your top, most popular posts and/ or most commented posts (that is based on topics most loved by readers)
Find Related Posts: Find 2 to 3 of your most popular posts that are related or serialized.
Merge them: Take the most popular posts that are related and knock them together in a coherent order. Use a Word processing document (MS Word, Open Office or similar). Congrats, you’ve just written your eBook. Didn’t I tell you it was easy and would be fast?
Step #1b – Method 2: For Fresh New Blogs With Few or No Contents
eBook Creation Method for New Blogs
The steps below are for people who have just started their blog and do not have lots of contents yet. However if you have up to 10 posts you can still use the above steps to quickly create your own free giveaway report.
OPTION #1: Create Your Own Contents
Here’s a secret – if you take off time to do this, you can even reuse and repurpose the contents in the eBook for your blog posts – so you win both ways – got new free report PLUS new blog contents. No time lost!
Main Topic Theme: Pick a theme to write your eBook on – think of one key problem that people in your market are struggling with and that you know how to fix. For example, the theme of my eBook could be “How to Write Your Own eBook in 1 Day”.
Structure or Outline: Get out the skeleton. Next, write 5 main points around that theme – what are the main ideas you would like to share.
Expand on Your Points: Here’s about putting flesh (contents) onto that skeleton (outline). Now take the main points one after another and fill them in. Start writing what you want share with your readers on that main point.
Start writing – write fast, as if on impulse – just pour down every idea and and edit later.
What are people talking about on that subject? Do a few research to see what others are talking about related to that topic. If you need help here, read my post on how to listen to what people are talking about on a subject. Do a Google search on a Keyword for your them and look under the discussion (left panel) – check out the questions people who actually want solutions are asking. This exercise can even give you ideas for new blog posts. Note: The idea here is not to deflect to other people’s content – just to get a few ideas about shaping your contents – such as picking up a few buzz words around it that can contribute to hot keywords: that’s why it’s the last step in this section.
Editing: Spell check and edit your document .
OPTION #2: Buy Cheap Ready-Made Contents (PLRs) and Rewrite To Sound Like You
This option is great for you if you work full time, or for any other reason, do not have time to write your eBook contents. You can purchase pre-written articles or reports, and then tweak them to make them uniquely yours. Step #3. Placing a Twitter Share Button In Your eBook
Follow the steps below to make it easy for other people to want to share your giveaway eBook/ short report (i.e your lead magnet).
Insert retweet buttons inside your new eBook. Michael Stelzner of Social Media Examinerhas written one of the best how-to posts about doing this and these were the instructions I used while creating my own eBooks.
Your contents are now ready. Yay! Next thing is to dress your new giveaway eBook – make your eBook attractive and convert it to PDF.
Some businesses have mastered the art of turning their prospects and customers to their referal engine, so that their a large percentage of their sales comes purely from other people freely promoting their products and services – it’s an art that you can also learn to apply in your own business. Step #4. Packaging Your eBook: eBook Layout – Portrait or Landscape?
The only factor to decide a layout is the readers’ comfort.
I love the Landscape layout (i.e. sideways, wide) as it makes a book more readable, providing more read space than the portrait. Portrait is the usual straight up, length-wise format.
The whole idea is to use a layout that makes reading easy on the eyes. I have found landscape to do it for me – it’s kind of best for online reading because it displays one full page at a time, so that the reader is rid of scrolling several times to read a single page. In addition, the display comes with a nice zoom that is easy on the eyes.
I sometimes use portrait layout for very short reports.
In MS Word 2007, you do that from page layout >>Orientation >>Landscape
I’ve got lots of my eBook readers telling me they just love the layout I use and I thought it’d be a good idea to share it here.
Step #5. Making Your Short Report / eBook Easy To Read – Fonts and Formatting
Again, the focus is on making the eBook easy-to-read. You can use font formats to make your eBooks appealing or enticing to read. Font formats play with ease on the eyes of readers.
Here are a few formatting tips you may want to use – they make reading online easy on the eyes. Ensure your formatting is uniform all
Font Type: Arial, Verdana,
Font Size: 12
Heading Styles: Heading Styles 1, 2, 3 for Major headings, sub and sub-sub headings.
Paragraph Spacing: 1.5
Step #6. Title Your Short Report/ eBook – Make It Compelling For Anyone To Desire It
Now that you have your whole eBook contents put together, you will need a name for your eBook.
Give your eBook an attention grabbing title. You may want to write a list of 5 titles and get friends or even readers to vote for the best one.
Step #7. Create eBook Table of Contents – Make it Searchable
Readers love it when a book is scan-able – make it easy for them to quickly hop on to specific sections of your book.
Don’t you just love it when you are looking for a quick fix and you pick up a book only to quickly locate a sub-topic that relates for what you are looking for? That’s what a table of contents would do for your eBook – they lead a reader to page numbers of topics within a book.
Some authors do not include Table of Contents; you may decide to include it or not.
However, if you decide to create a Table of Contents, here’s how to do that in Microsoft Word: Click References >>Table of Contents
Step #8. Give Your Short Report/ eBook an Appealing Front Cover Page
With Microsoft Word you can quickly create nice covers from their inbuilt templates.
Here’s how to do that – Click Insert >>Cover Page (then select the one you like).
**Note: After selecting a cover page, you can replace the graphic image from Microsoft Word cover page with yours. Just click the image, delete and then paste the one you have somewhere in your laptop.
Step #9. Create an eCover for Your eBook
You may want to skip this step for now, it’s not compulsory – at the time of writing this tutorial, I only managed to create an eCover for only one of my eBooks, and plan to create other eCovers later.
Note that this post is about creating your own eBook in just one day so we are not going to use any complex design tool here.
Do-it-yourself Method #1: One method is to take a screen capture of the cover page you created in the step above and paste it where you need to use an eBook cover. It would suffice in many cases. Jing (by Techsmith) is an excellent free screen capture tool – I use it too.
Do-It-yourself Method #2: MyeCovermaker.Com is a cool website where you can create quick eBook covers for your eBook free – does not require any learning curve and is fast and easy to use – simply select one of the free eBook templates they have, upload an image for the cover (if you have one, if not just use theirs). They have on-screen instructions you can follow.
Step #10. Insert Your Blog Links (URL) In To The eBook
Insert the URL to your blog or website somewhere in the eBook. You may want to do this in the page footer or within the “About Author” area.
It’s neater to wrap your links to a phrase or keyword instead of having plain open “www.YOURWEBSITENAME.com”. Do this by selecting your blog name and then clicking the “insert link” option so that when readers click that word they are automatically taken to your blog.
Step #11. Write An “About Author” Page – Don’t Be A Stranger to Your eBook Readers
If you have an “About Me” description on your blog, you can simply summarize it and paste in your eBook.
I have seen some authors place their “About Author” pages at the beginning of their eBooks while some place it at the end of their eBooks.
If you already have got some some success stories and testimonials in your niche, keeping your ‘About Author’ in the beginning pages, before or after the Table of Contents.
If you are just starting out, you may want to first put your best contents upfront and place your “About Author” at the end of your eBook, so that readers can judge you (as a value bringer first) from your contents – if they accept your contents and find value in it, they will accept you as a brand and an upcoming authority in the market.
You may want to look at my own expanded “About Me” page for this blog, to get an idea for yours. Note that on eBooks and free reports, I condense my “About Me” to about 2 medium sized paragraphs.
Step #12. How to Convert eBook to PDF and Still Retain Clickable Links (URLs)
Ensuring to use a PDF converter that keeps your links clickable.
Clickable links make it easy for readers to go to your website and take the next action
Here are few PDF converters that preserve hyper-links (URLs):
Free Microsoft PDF plugin for computers with Office 2007 and above installed. I use this and love it because it creates very white pages and nice reading layout. It’s an Adobe Air programme so first get Adobe Air program installed before getting this – it’s a fast install and also free.
Free version of Primo PDF
Step #13. How To Upload Your eBook – Give it a Home
Now that you’re done with packaging your eBook/ short report, where would you store it? You need a place to store your eBook on your blog and you need the link to that place to give out to people to download your free report.
This is the download link you will give people or send your subscribers to download.
There are two ways about hosting your eBook – on your blog’s server or a cloud storage.
Housing your eBook on Your Blog Server: Mitz of Websitebuilder.com has one of the simplest easy to follow steps and videos to upload your pdf to your wordpress blog server. Again this is the same steps I used to do mine. Click here to follow the steps to upload your new eBook to your hostgator server.
Note: if you use another hosting platform (not Hostgator), the steps would be slightly different. However, you can also upload your eBook or any document to your server using any FTP (Filezilla or similar) .
On Cloud Storage: As time goes on, you may create more eBooks and may want to house some outside your blog server. I have a few eBooks and have now now stored some on Dropbox cloud storage which gives free 2GB space and you can lock any document you do not want the public to see. Every document stored gets a link (URL) which you can give people to download from – that’s what I do for most of my eBooks. You can get your own Dropbox free 2GB storage here http://db.tt/JqaJGCv.
Step #14. Make a Shorter Version of Your eBook Link
Shorten the long eBook link: You would see that the download link to your eBook is long, I am sure you’ll want a prettier, shorter version of the same link.
Get a pretty link version of your eBook’s long download link before giving the links to people. Use Bit.ly to create short smart, prettier links.
What you do here is to enter bit.ly in your browser address bar
Then paste your long (ugly) eBook link and wait a few split seconds for bit.ly to give you a shorter version of the link.
**You’ll need bit.ly again and so it’s a good idea to signup (free) so that bit.ly keeps a record of all the links you’ll shorten and the click analytics in one single place.
Step #15. How to Track Number of eBook Downloads
Apart from making eBook download your link prettier and shorter, bit.ly also keeps a track of the number of people that click and download your eBook. Any time you sign into your bit.ly account you’ll see a record of clicks your eBook download link has got – an indication of how many people downloaded it.
Step #16. How to Increase Your Subscriber List With Your Free eBook
Now that your eBook / free report is ready, one way to use it is as a lead magnet. Successful bloggers / online marketers are always building their lists. They use free reports to encourage and entice their readers to sign up to their list. That makes it a win-win situation.
If you’d like to build your lists using your free reports, do not give away your eBook PDF download link yet. You are going to create a bridge for your readers to pass to download – that is an opt-in form.
If you already have a subscribers opt-in form on your sidebar, it’d be a good idea to tell your readers to “get your free report by subscribing to your list” or “subscribe to your list and get your free report” —write this in a way that’ll compel anyone to want to download your eBook before leaving your blog.
You are done. Congratulations, if you got this far.
Promote it. Now go tell the World about your eBook – share your eBook short link on Twitter, Facebook, forums and everywhere you think the audience will benefit from it (that’s hoping your book shows people how to solve a problem). Other places to share your eBooks for traffic include scribd (I love this), slideshare, docstoc, eSnips,free-ebooks.net and getfreeebooks.com. I’ll share more places to promote your eBooks for free, in a future post.
Give your Free Report to your subscribers. Be sure to let your readers know they’ll get your free eBook simply by subscribing to your blog newsletter. Include this message on your opt-in form.
Track download. Once in a while go check the number of people that have downloaded your eBook – note that the proportion of download you’ll get is proportional to the level of people you exposed your link to. Lesson: Don’t get stuck on checking your download metrics; instead focus more on sending people to your eBook link – share it, share, share…

4 Simple Methods For Generating A Huge And Effective Keyword List Using Familiar Free Tools
Are you a beginner or not-so-beginner online writer and just beginning to understand Search Engine Optimization (SEO) or learning keyword research? Good SEO and keyword research starts with generating a list of good, related and relevant keyword list – there’s no other way around it. In this post, you’ll discover how to use simple and familiar free tools (that you probably already know and use in other ways) to generate a huge list of related and highly relevant keyword list, as part of your keyword research for content or blog / website SEO.
Why Build Keyword Lists?
They say that the money is in the list. That’s correct BUT another (real) truth is that more money is in the Golden keywords within your contents; keywords that lead the desperate, willing and hungry buyers who have cash in hand, straight to your store front and promotional contents. More prospects will join your list if they can find your posts when they search for information on the search engines.
So, if you’re looking to sell any product or service online, you need to learn how to find a list of good, highly relevant keywords that the people who want to buy now are searching with. Else, even with an award winning content, a competitor with a poor content (but with the right keywords) will get the sale.
Writing your contents, naturally speaking with a group of related key phrases (aka keywords), will make it easy for any reader (and search engines) to ‘place it’ even without the title, while creating an opportunity to rank for multiple long tail keywords (more on that later). That’s because your content will have a topic theme.
Now, you may be asking “when should I build a keyword list“?” You should build a keyword list when you want to write a post / article or when you want to determine content categories for a new website or blog.
Beginning Keyword Research: 4 Fast And Simple Methods to Generate Good Keyword Lists On The Fly
The goal of this post is to keep it really stupidly simple, as much as possible. This post is the second in the series to demystify Search Engine Optimization (SEO) for you (a beginner or intermediate blogger) and let you know that you too can rank high for competitive keywords in your market niche. You’ll soon discover that SEO is only scary either because you’re still far away or have not yet found a simplified approach to it.

Caveat:I’m not an SEO expert but I know a few non-complicated things about SEO and keyword research, that is working for me, that you can learn to improve your search engine rankings and free, organic traffic.
So, let’s go dive in to the topic of the day, shall we?
NOTE: I suggest you follow this series by experimenting the steps in this post. You’ll need to use an experimental post – so first decide on the title for your blog post/ article you’ll conduct keyword research for.
Keyword Research Method 1: Brainstorming to Generate A Keyword List
Step 1: Brainstorm different possible phrases a searcher could possibly type in the Google search box
Ask yourself: “if I was to ask someone a question on this topic, what would I say? OR if I was searching Google, on information on this same topic, what would I type?
*For example here: I want to write on the topic that I titled my post: “How to find the perfect birthday gift for a friend”
NOTE: To practice these methods, start writing a draft blog post title to work along with. It doesn’t have to be a serious post, you can even write a practice post on a notepad or Wordprocessor, whatever is comfortable with you – as long as you are practicing ‘how to generate keyword lists’ as you read this post.
Step 2: Write 5 different ways you would ask someone for information on that topic
If you had a limit of 2, 3 or 4 words maximum to ask your questions without losing the meanings, what would they be? From each of the 5 different ways you wrote, filter out most important key phrases (2 word key phrases, 3 word key phrases etc.)
Now back to my experimental blog title of: “How to find the perfect birthday gift”, the 5 ways I could ask someone the question or type inside Google search box can be:
best birthday gift for a friend, best birthday gift, idea for best birthday gift, where to get nice birthday gifts, places for best birthday gifts
Thinking Sideways: This brainstorming keywords method of keyword research is so critical and essential to generating your ‘seed keywords’ but is often overlooked by many freelance writers and bloggers. In fact, my friend LaKesha Brown calls this method “the Thinking Sideways method” of finding click-magnetizing keywords. In her post, she illustrates with examples how to brainstorm long tail keywords.
*Hint: Long tail Keywords are those that are composed of 3 and above words in length. I use Traffic Travis to save time on generating keyword lists. It spits out hundreds of keywords for me in a matter of seconds. I highly recommend this tool. Once I got it, I never imagined how I managed without it.
Step 3: Write your generated Keywords as a list
Take those brainstorm ideas (short versions) you got from step 2 above and write them down in a list, to give you your keyword list.
So, in my case, I’ll have:
best birthday gift for a friend
best birthday gift
idea for best birthday gift
where to get nice birthday gifts
places for best birthday gifts
That is my keyword list. What’s yours? Are you working along as you read this, if so leave me a comment and tell us your own keyword list you brainstormed.
Why would you generate a Keyword list, you may ask? As you can see, it took a bit of time to think through to create that list. So we’ll need the help of a Keyword Research tool to generate more keywords faster. But they need seed keywords to give them an idea of what related keywords to return to us.
NOTE: You can use a thesaurus or synonym checker to generate more variations of that same question. For instance, another variation of:
“best birthday gift” could be“best birthday present”OR “nice / good birthday gift”. I got those two variations from an online thesaurus, under “synonym”.
*You can use Thesaurus.Com to find synonyms of your seed keywords.
Keyword Research Method 2: Mining List of Related Keywords From Google Search “Related Searches”
The second method for building targeted keyword lists is the Google “related searches” which is a feature inside the usual Google search results page.
For Google Search to present you with a related keywords list:
First you’ll have to enter one of the key phrases (aka keywords) you brainstormed (aka ‘a seed keyword’) into the Google search box, as illustrated in the image below where I entered my seed keyword ‘birthday gift’;
Next is to look on the left hand sidebar for “Related Searches”. [Hint: Sometimes you'll not see "related searches" but will see "more search tools" which will expand, if clicked, to show you the 'related searches' tab;
Take a look at the image below, on the left hand side - the area highlighted in red is where you'll find and click "related searches"
Then look up your search results page to find a set of more related keywords that Google presents you with, under "related searches" (as shown in the second image below);
I love this method and use it every time I want to write a post, to have an insight into the different variations of search terms for my keyword. This method generates lots of really long tail keywords (that is, any keyword made up of three or more words).
Hint: Long tail keywords get more traffic because fewer online writers use them in their contents; therefor you'll find it easier to rank on top Google search results page if you write your articles with them (low competition).
Keyword Research Method 3: Finding Suggestions For Related Keywords Using “Google Wonder Wheel”
The third method for generating good keyword lists is by using a free tool called Google Wonder Wheel, which can be accessed from within Google Search pages, as illustrated in the image.
Here’s how to find and use the Google Wonderwheel tool to find more related keywords:
Google Wonder Wheel is found within the Google Search Results page, so here are the steps to generate more relevant keywords with Google Wonder Wheel:
Go to the usual Google Search page and enter one of your brainstormed keywords (remember we learnt the ‘brainstorming method” in method 1 above);
Look to your left hand side and click “More Search Tools” on the sidebar (see the image below for illustration, yellow arrow)
You should now find the Google Wonder Wheel (as shown in the image below, red highlight)
Your wonder wheel pulls up, with many nodes, each one is a keyword (as you can see in the second image below) – I entered my brainstormed keyword (‘keyword research’) AND the Google Wonder Wheel presents me with the following keyword: free keyword research, keyword research, keyword elite, google api keyword suggestion…
You may find that some of the keywords presented will not be relevant to the purpose you have in mind, ignore those and focus on digging deeper with the relevant keywords
Next step is to dig deep, one relevant keyword at a time. Here’s what you do – click one relevant keyword node at a time and you’ll discover that it generates another Wonder Wheel. In my case (third image below), I clicked “top keywords” and you can see that it generates more keywords related to that term “top keywords”
Next step is to write down the list of the relevant, related keywords you find while researching keywords with the Google Wonder Wheel
Look at the keyword variation generated with the Google Wonder Wheel – each node on the Google Wonder wheel is a keyword, and you can see that they have two and more words combination (that is, long tail keywords).
Hint: What To Do When You Can’t Find “Google Wonder Wheel” Under The “Search Tools” Sidebar
Turn off “Google Instant” temporarily: Sometimes Google Wonder Wheel interferes with Google Instant and you may need to turn off your Google instant for a while so that you can use Google Wonder Wheel. Here’s how to turn off Google Instant:
Look up your Google search results page – top right beside the “Sign Out” you’ll see “Settings” –> Then Click “Settings” –>Click “Search Settings” –>Scroll Down and you’ll see “Google Instant” –> Then Click the button “Use Google Instant – predictions and results appear while typing” –>Finally, Click “Save Preferences”
Do your search again and locate the Google Wonder Wheel
*Note:Sometimes I notice that Google Wonder Wheel still does not come up even after I turn off the “Google Instant” from the ‘search settings’. In case that happens, just try it again the next day and next day – looks like Google turns it off and on. Ensure to try this hack, if not for anything, you’ll be convinced you have learned one new thing.

LATEST UPDATE (July 11, 2011): Recently, there had been frequent service outage by one of our favorite keyword research tool, Google Wonder Wheel. I thought it would be back ‘soon’ as it it used to. However, last week I read on one blog that it looks like Google has temporarily or permanently taken it off. Next day, one of my readers Ameya of SpiceNfries pointed me to a new post on SearchEngineLand.Com that reported a Google spokesperson saying that Google Wonder Wheel was officially offline, as part of Google’s service and products consolidation exercise. Let’s hope that Google will bring this cool tool back – so, I suggest you check once in a while. – because in the past it was on and off.
Guess what? However, I discovered an even better tool that generates tons of long tail keywords. It’s called LongtailPro – I highly recommend you get it because in a few seconds it can generate hundreds of long tail keywords for you.
Keyword Research Method 4: More Related Keyword Research Idea Using Google “Something Different” Sidebar – Niche Research Made easy
Did you notice a set of keyword variations on the sidebar, under “Something Different”? Did you see they are of a different twist? Look at it again on the image below.
When I searched ‘birthday gift’, I found these under the “Something Different” tab on the sidebar:
wedding gift, birthday present, graduation gift, housewarming gift, valentines day gift
Now, these are the kind of keywords you could use as your category pages, if you were creating a new niche affiliate website on ‘Gifts” – so that you would have contents under each of those categories.

Hint: What To Do When “Related Search” Feature Is Not Displayed
“Related Search” feature appears to be off, for some countries. However, there’s a way around it.
Start searching on Google as you do normally –> Go to “Google.Com” (It’s a text link you’ll from on top right, right under the box where you typed your search query. There you should find the word “Google.Com”) –>Click “Google.Com” and you should find “Related Searches” showing on the left sidebar, right under “All results”.
Note: You do not have to turn off “Google Instant” to get this on. On a good day, even Wonder wheel usually comes on without turning off Google instant.
Where we are so far: Those are only 4 out of the 8 simple and fast keyword research methods I’ll cover in this beginner series.
Where we’re going: We’ll also cover how to write in keywords, so save those keyword lists you researched in today’s exercise because you’ll need them to create a Search Engine Optimized (SEO) content, when we get there.

After that, they forget they have a business.
Action Item: Set daily actions to do in your business and commit to doing them daily at specified time. Treat your business as what it is – a business.
Online Business Blunder#2: No Definite Periodic ROI Expectation
Many bloggers and online entrepreneurs fail to put in enough efforts in their business because they have no set target for periodic (daily, weekly or monthly) returns from their efforts and business. When there’s nothing to look forward to, humans naturally tend to lose it. Some startup online entrepreneurs and bloggers just have this kind of mindset for anything business. However, if it was named “part-time J.O.B”, they would be totally alert with a different mindset and attitude toward their business. They are just conditioned to be “360 degrees employees for life”.
For this kind of ‘business people’, it is advisable to start by working on themselves and their mindset before venturing into any form of business; else they’d just lazy over serious income generating activities and never be able to put in the kind of efforts and consistency that produce success.
Online Business Mistake #3: Absence of Records
Many small and home business owners believe that record keeping is only for big, established businesses and so they deliberately fail to keep a record of business-related expenses. In some cases, they keep partial records of expenses because their start-up cost is too small for them to not consider it a risk or loss. Some bloggers and online marketers cannot even tell how much they have put in their businesses so far.

Online Business Blunder #4: Lack of Strategy and Plan
Do you have an online business plan or a blogging business plan? It’s ironic but a lot of online marketers and bloggers do not have one – not even a mini-business plan in mind-map or a notepad.
Day in day out, these bloggers and online marketers simply do any activity that feels right, or comes to their mind, spending as much time as they feel good on any activity of the day – without care of how big or small the particular activity impacts on their overall business objectives, hence monthly business revenue.
Get any of these: mind-map software (freemind or Bubbl.us are free tools) or a notepad or evernote. Note this does not have to be a formal, serious write-up – just draft and sketch on your notepad or mind-map. Making it sound very serious and formal usually cause entrepreurs to never get to start writing a business plan.
Income Goal: Write down your income expectation per month, from your business – remember, “start small and be realistic”
Set S.M.A.R.T Objectives: Write down objectives for different part of your business:
Traffic goal could be: “I want to increase my daily blog traffic from 10 visitors per day to 20, within the next 60 days”
Strategy for achieving goals: What activities will you be doing daily or weekly on each of those parts of your business in order to achieve each set objectives.
Traffic generation strategy: An example could be: Daily submit 2 blog posts (day and evening) to 30 social bookmarking sites using Onlywire, and follow a blog commenting plan to comment on 5 blogs daily….etc.
Write a similar strategy for every part of your online business process: such as list building plan, content creation plan, link building plan etc.
Be sure to look at your online mini-business plan at the start and close of every day to implement your daily tasks and track your achievements daily, weekly (I like to track achievements weekly so I don’t get into the habit of analysis-paralysis).
Online Business Blunder #5: Doing Nothing To Leave Stagnation
Every business should have a written plan to break to at least even within the 90 to 180 days (that is 3 to 6 months) of startup. Many small and online home business owners continue to fund their businesses from their pockets or salaries, long after start-up, instead of letting go of what’s not working and searching for and implementing “what’s working now” for others so that they grow their businesses to self-sufficiency within 6 to 12 months.
Lesson: Take action on every new knowledge. Test every new blogging and marketing strategy to know what works and what doesn’t.
Online Business Blunder #6: Sticking with the Wrong Crowd
This is an extra bonus tip to the 5 already discussed above.
It’s good to hang out with successful people but not when you discover that months after months of following, you have not replicated a tiny bit of their success. Not a good idea to hang on. Many people just love staying with a popular successful person even while they have remained broke up to 6 months and more of following that “leader”. This usually happens in Network Marketing or MLM companies where some people just love to “flock and belong” to the popular camps and say “do you know that I also know John Doe?”
The only way to test if you should be there is to ask yourself how much you have become like that leader within 90 to 180 days of following. How much have you grown your business or income like him? If it ain’t working for you there, go find another leader. A particular leader may not be teaching in a style that you’ll effectively absorb while some people are doing well there.
It should be all about you and all about the interest and health of your business – how long do you want to keep following ‘a popular leader’ that’s not paying off in your business health (and bank account too)?. Time is money – how much longer do you want to keep wasting your time being a learner? It’s time you start thinking of teaching other people what you have learnt so far and if you have not learnt anything this far, get out and be useful to yourself. Are you just looking for popularity or to really EXPERIENCE financial freedom? It’s all about what’s working for you – you have to set a time frame for testing out any time and monetary investment and head over to “what’s working and where”. You cannot get back lost time, therefore use it wisely!

Every week, these groups send out an “Invite Me List” to members and all you need to do is to upload all the names to your LinkedIn page, using the steps – similar to Facebook method of uploading contact list. NOTE: You can click “archive”, for any fellow Open Networker invite request you do not want to connect with. If it’s archived, you may want to connect with that person in the future. **Those are some of the ones I have used previously. Be sure to check out if there are any LinkedIn Open Networker groups specifically for your niche: for example – there are open networker groups for “real estate’ professionals/ businesses.
After joining a LinkedIn Open Networker group, do the following 3 things:
#1: Let Group Members Know You Are Open To Invites
Go to each of the Open Networker groups you joined and leave a message that you are open to new connection invites; also mention the kind of people you are interested in accepting invites from – that helps to ensure you get only targeted LinkedIn followers from your niche and related niches.
#2: Let the Public Know You Are Open to Invites
Stating somewhere on your profile that you are an open Networker (or LION, for short) and welcome all invites will score you more LinkedIn invites from time to time.
#3: Scrutinize Invites Before Accepting
It’s good practice to first check profiles of invites you receive, to be sure that you’ll be interested to connect with the persons. Note that if they are not your exact match, someone else 6 degrees away from them (or less) are likely to be, PLUS your direct connection can introduce you to a valuable contact who is on their first level connection. I used this strategy PLUS “Invite Me List” from Open Networker Groups, to kick-start my other LinkedIn profile.
#4: Archive Any Invites You Do Not Feel Like Accepting
You don’t have to accept every invite you get, if you don’t want to, archive the ones you don’t want to connect to. Do NOT click “Ignore” or “I Don’t Know You (IDK)” – open networkers’ code is against that. Maybe, in the future you may want to accept an archived invite.
WHY PEOPLE ON LINKEDIN ACCEPT ALMOST ALL INVITES: THE 6 DEGREES OF SEPARATION AWAY FROM YOUR IDEAL CUSTOMER - if your direct LinkedIn contact is not your ideal customer, his own LinkedIn contacts may be, and you can ask him/ her for referrals, which is where the power of LinkedIn lies.
LinkedIn has a feature called “Introduction” and because LinkedIn reports your connections breakdown down to the profile and numbers of people in your first level and second level connection and down, by an arrow visual mapping. Perhaps, you want to connect with a particular market or company that you know uses your service or product.
If you search LinkedIn by people, you are likely to find your first level connection (who is not anywhere close to being your ideal client) is connected on first level to an influencer that may get you tons of business if you connect to them.
That’s where you’ll need to ask that first level to an introduction to that person. Usually, LinkedIn members are happy to introduce you to their connections.

In Search Of Web Traffic and Backlinks – My Experiment With High Page Rank Article Directories
As you know, traffic is what a blog needs in order to get a lot of readers’ eyeballs on its contents while backllinks are what it needs to climb its way up the search engines pages; and when the links are DoFollow, you’ve got icing on the cake – that means the DoFollow high Page Rank (PR) Article site would also pass some of it’s page rank juice to your blog. Getting little drops of page rank juice from here and there flowing in to your blog, will in turn help increase your blog’s page rank over time.
Just a few months after the birth of this blog, I embarked on article submission on some high page rank and low (good) Alexa ranked article submission sites for building initial backlinks and generating traffic on this blog. The purpose of the experiment was to get an idea of the REAL traffic potentials of each of the high page rank article directories I submitted to. I wanted to know which article sites to pay more attention to, in the future, with regards to traffic generation and backlink building.
Although, I have now written more articles in the listed high page rank article directories, I have also experimented with some other high page rank article directories (not listed here), I will update this post and keep you informed about more article directories worth mentioning.
All Article Sites Are Not Born The Same…
This post is an analysis of my article marketing experiment (with my own hand-written articles) and you’ll get to know that particular high page rank article directory where I got lots of article views within 2 days. That was much more than I got from all the other over 10 high page rank directories I also submitted articles to.
Because I wanted to have an idea of the true traffic generation potential of those article sites, I did not do any form of promotion for traffic; no social bookmarking; no backlinking.

My High Page Rank Article Directories Experiment Results Plus An Article Site That Sent Me More Traffic Than All the Others Sites Combined
ArticlesBase puts NoFollow on outgoing links, that means it’d still be a backlink but you won’t get a flow of the Page Rank (PR) to your blog.
Getting accepted as a writer is easy. All you need is to simply signup and they will send you an approval via email.
Article approval timeline is very fast – 24 hours maximum is my experience here.
Backlinks Potentials: I love this this article directory because, of all the high page rank article directories I have tried so far, I get the most of backlinks from this one. That is because a couple of my articles on articlesbase are getting picked up and republished by other website owners, and as a result, I get new backlinks. Since I discovered this I made ArticlesBase my number one hands-free backlink generator.
NoFollow: Although articlesbase applies NoFollow to the links on articles you submit, I don’t mind because one article there can mean tons of backlinks on auto. Guess what? From the frequent trackbacks I get whenever my articles were being republished, I decided to tweak the other articles titles to attract more re-publishers. I also made sure to have two links in my resource section (author bio area).
Number of Links Allowed: Another reason why I love ArticlesBase is that you can add links to your content body in addition to the resource box. That means each time an article is republished, you’ll get up to 4 new backlinks PLUS traffic from the host site.
SEO Ranking Potential: Another reason I like ArticlesBase is that the articles here tend to do well on search engine rankings.
Volume of Traffic Per Article: When looking at volume of traffic and article views on these high page rank article directories, I tend to want to measure how an article directory is working for me, on per article basis. However, some bloggers say they combine the total views of all their articles on a directory.
How long it takes to get a good volume of traffic is important, especially if you want to compare different article directories side by side. Although some get massive traffic from ArticlesBase, I am not satisfied with the number of article views I got in one from this site.
Tracking: ArticlesBase has a dashboard where you can easily see the number of views you have for each article. However, they do not have other metrics such as for tracking number of publishers that have republished your article, like eZine articles does.
Getting accepted in selfgrowth involves you signing up and sending them a sample of one or more articles or posts you had written (before) - they’ll only accept you if they assess your work and find it satisfactorily within the standards they are looking for.
Article Approval Timeline: Relatively fast. I have got approvals from 1 to 3 days, an average of 3 days though.
Tracking Article Views: I have still not being able to find out how to check my article views on this article directory. Please let me know if you know how I can check the number of views in my selfgwrowth.com admin area.
Getting Accepted: Buzzle also has a similar method like Selfgrowth, for accepting writers.
Article Approval: Buzzle is operates a very strict article approval policy. In fact they delete any article they they do not accept without notice. You just have to write a tightly unique article if you want an article to be approved. However, once Buzzle editors approve your article they’d gladly send you tons of traffic that will make you smile – and your hard work worthwhile.
Article Approval Timeline is very slow at Buzzle – 1 to 2 weeks.
Traffic Potentials: This article directory kind of surprised me, in a good way though. Imagine checking my dashboard on Buzzle and seeing over 600 article views within 2 days! That is more article views than I got from all the articles I have written in over 10 directories combined – without promotion.
At that time, I had about 2 articles in eZine articles and 2 also on articlesbase – and less than 50 views from both articlesbase and eznearticles combined.
*This was in 2 months (initial 2 days was about 600) – not one promotion from my end.
I love this article directory because of its speedy article approval – instant approval is what happens at GoArticles. They also get indexed by Google, almost instantly.
Getting accepted at GoArticles is extremely fast. One snag here – I have not found a way to track my article views at GoArticles and so not sure what the figures are. However, I noticed that my articles there rank pretty well when supported with backlinking but on the first day, they kind of swim to page 1 of Google.
Getting Accepted as an author on ArticleBiz is easy and fast.
Article Approval Timeline: Very Slow. I did not even get any email about article approval. I only found out it was approved when I got a link-back notice on my blog’s dashboard – that was from someone who republished the article.
Although ezinearticles is mentioned as the monster of all high page rank article directories, the traffic I got during my traffic experiment (within the experiment timeline) is not as much as I expected (going with the buzz about it).

Article approval Timeline: EzineArticles is not fast at approving articles. I have had my articles approved between 1 – 2 weeks, usually within 7 days.
Tracking Views: This is where ezinearticles beats all other high page rank article directories in my traffic experiment, hands down. They have a very detailed analytics and traffic dashboard where you can easily see how many people read your articles and how many publishers republished it. However, trackback I receive indicate that I have more articles republished at articlesbase than at ezinearticles.
At first I thought that Gather was just like any other social bookmarking site but then I found out I was mistaken – when I decided to play around with the blog feature. Hmm, I wrote a very simple mini-article (that was on Kim Roach’s Traffic Dashboard review) and to my surprise Gather gathered its way to the top of the search engines (around page 2 or so, not sure again) for the keyword I optmized that article for.
Looking at the top featured articles on Gather, they seem to feature more of entertainment and lifestyle articles on their front page. However, since it ranks good on search engines, it has a use in my article marketing plan.
Article approval Timeline: Instant publishing because Gather.Com is a Web 2.0 property merged with social bookmarking where you use the free blog to write articles, while you can also post your status updates on Gather. Thus your articles do not go through any approval process – it’s published the instant you hit “publish” button.
This not your typical article directory, rather it is a social network to connect and share ideas with other internet and network marketers. BetterNetworker.Com is a very active online knowledge and learning centre owned by Mike Dilard and a lot of top internet and network marketers publish quality contents on this network. Members can post contents in BetterNetworker articles, blogs, forums and classified ads section.
Getting accepted at BetterNetworker is easy – it’s a social network and so all you need to do is simply signup for BetterNetworker membership.
Article approval Timeline: Instant.
Articles Traffic: BetterNetworker.Com gets a pretty good traffic from members of the community; recent articles and articles received the highest number of views are featured on the home page – that way every new article gets exposure and gets read.
If you are lucky to have top member votes on your article, you can get featured in the Better Networker e-Magazine and that could land you thousands of views in a single day.
My articles on BetterNetworker.Com have done pretty well in the first few days after publishing, getting an average of over 100 views, not anywhere close to my sweet Buzzle traffic in a few days.
Search Engine Ranking: Google seems to love BetterNetworker. Articles here rank well on search engines, even the ones posted in the classified section.
Tracking Traffic: You can easily view the number of reads each of your article gets.
Although this is a web 2.0 property where you can create your own free blog and publish whatever you like, I have included it here because of the results I got there. The traffic spike was cool – lots more than most other traffic sites in a few days, next to reader views I get from BetterNetworker.
Another thing I observed at Hubpages is it’s community of very likable people. They are very happy to welcome and reach out to each other – commenting on your contents and adding you as a connection. They are simply voracious readers of any subject at all.
Hubpages internal traffic (from its readers) is very good. Apart from the traffic I got, my content at HubPages ranked well for its keywords and kind of sticks/ sits at a good place on the search engines, without much assistance (backlinks or social bookmarking promotions).
Given that HubPages shares revenues with its writers, I think it offers triple benefit to its writers – traffic, backlinks and making (more)money.
Like Hubpages, Squidoo tends to stick well on the search engines and gets good rankings if you do some bit of SEO and backlinking. I also like that Squidoo allows you to display your blog feed, and that brings me a few traffic from time to time. However I got better traffic from Hubpages, and HubPages community are voracious readers – Hubpages will send you good traffic and comments from every single article you write.
The Squidoo community has a lot of SEO-loving writers and you see lots of articles about Squidoo SEO. On a certain day, I decided to take a go on the strategies written in one of those Squidoo lenses – just to test whether they actually work. I did a few tweaks to my existing Squidoo lens which was on Squidoo rank #150,000+. Lo and behold, when I refreshed after 5 minutes of publishing, I freaked out – now ranking number #40,000.
Moment of good feelings that was. Eureka! Squidoo SEO works, now I learnt some new trick to apply on future Squidoo lenses. Overall, Squidoo is good for getting your contents ranked good and for backlinks too.
11. Press Release Sites
Although press releases are not article directories but I thought to just slip it in here for you to see what other places worked for me (and would work for your too), and perhaps try them too. I tried a few press release sites and these ones ranked top for my keywords and so I used them again.
a. Free-press-release.com – This press release site dis pretty well at ranking for the keyword of my test contents and it also sticks well on the search engines, without any assistance (backlinking or sending traffic to it).
b. Indiepropub.com – This press release site, owned by Jon Griffin, got one of my releases on Google News within a blink of an eye. Hahaha, just kidding – that release (was on Kim Roach’s Traffic Dashboard) made it to Google News in less than 10 minutes to be precise. I’m happy that the other release has also maintained its position on Google for its keyword.
Just from that alone, I got over 70 retweets in a few hours. That was such a sweet moment for me, and a motivation to do more of this thing that works and here where it works.
